Top Left-Hand Photo: Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9619 and two other units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9619 is an AF-16 built in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. Bottom Left-Hand Photo: Shown here is the PRR's "Aerotrain" built by General Motors during July of 1955. Top Right-Hand Photo: Shown here is PRR engine #8826, an AS-16M built by the American Locomotive Company in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. Middle Right-Hand Photo: Shown here is PRR-Railway Express Car #7480. Bottom Right-Hand Photo: Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8606 and #8608. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. |

Here is page nine of a 12-page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial." It was published originally in the Winter 2004 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 40. Middle Photo, Partial Caption: "New York-to-Pittsburgh Aerotrain, in the summer of 1956." Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Centipede #5834 assisting a westbound freight up Horseshoe Curve, circa 1956." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5834 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1948; it was designed to be a 3,000 horsepower passenger locomotive (BP-60A), but was later downgraded to be a 2,500 horsepower freight and helper engine (BH-50). Also visible is PRR N-5 caboose #477724. Both photos by Ken Murry. |
