Viewing Album: PRR: Cab Ride in EP-22 #5708 ~ 29 DEC 1962
By:
Thomas C. Ayers
Dates:
12/29/1962 - 12/29/1962
Album Info:
Here are nine original photos that I took when Thomas H. Lantz and I were privileged to ride in the cab of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5708 pulling a passenger train from Pittsburgh to Altoona on Saturday, 29 December 1962. Tom and I were avid fans of all things relating to the Pennsylvania Railroad. During the Summer of 1962, Mr. Herbert P. Ruck (Superintendent of the Samuel Rea Shop in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania) arranged for us to tour all of the PRR's facilities in the Altoona area. Mr. Ruck also arranged the cab ride which is the subject of these photos that offer some sense of our once-in-a-lifetime experience. Also included are several other items germane to our journey.

Title:
PRR 5708, EP-22, 1962
Description:
Cab Ride. Here is an original photo that I took after riding in the cab of a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger locomotive from Pittsburgh to Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 December 1962. Shown here (L to R) are Mr. Thomas H. Lantz, the locomotive engineman, Mr. R.K. "Slim" Creighton (our PRR Escort), and the locomotive fireman. They are standing next to PRR engine #5708, an EP-22 built by EMD in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. It is parked at the Altoona Station, at the end of our journey on a very snowy afternoon! Anyone recognize the two enginemen?
