Album Info:For a time in the late 80's and 1990's, I was part of the Southern Tier Division of the RRE. We put out a newsletter, which in those days was done by pasting(literally) photos to an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper and copying as many as we needed for our mailing list. Since color copiers were expensive, we did ours on a standard Xerox type machine. For this effort, I took black and white photos on a sporadic basis. Here are some of the results.

Combined effort
Title:  Combined effort
Description:  Sometimes if there were not enough cars for two trains, 558 and 270 would be combined out of Buffalo. Such is the case here, as the 105 car train has power for both of its components, 270s power ahead, with 558s two CP units trailing. We see it at East Hornell, where it is about to meet a hi-wide Conrail extra.

Interesting yard power
Title:  Interesting yard power
Description:  A GP 40-2 and a GP 10 work at the east end of Gang Mills yard, cleared onto the eastbound main from the yard lead as DABU rolls in from the west. The GP 40 was not unusual here. We saw lots of them in all kinds of service, from locals to stack trains. The GP 10, on the other hand, was something of a novelty, as they tended to stay down toward Enola and eastern PA. We rarely saw them on the Tier.

Motley mix
Title:  Motley mix
Description:  Conrail, as a rule in its later days, generally ran a fairly unified power consist-a set of six axle units, sometimes four, depending on what was available, and what standard practice was. Occasionally, something would get out of kilter, and it became anything goes. Here we see an OIBU rolling west with a GP 38 leading an SD 50, and a pair of NS units, one GE, one EMD. They have their 99 cars well in hand, and will get over the road promptly.

Title:  The Tier, a semaphore and an empty path
Description:  CP train 557 rolls west on the Tier, taking its 21 cars past one of the classic Erie semaphores at MP 247. The empty path to the left of the tracks is the roadbed of the Lehigh Valley Auburn Branch, which ran next to the Erie most of the way from Sayre to Owego. It was pulled up after CR startup in 1976.

Drab day
Title:  Drab day
Description:  Id go out in pretty much anything, on the theory that trains ran no matter what, so it would be a good idea to record the action. Besides, the Tier weather being what it is, if I only went out on good days, Id see ten trains a year. Still, January could be especially bleak, sometimes with only 30% of the possible sun coming through. On one of those days, 557 rolls around the big curve at MP 231. I was the only one to witness the event.

Waiting on time
Title:  Waiting on time
Description:  The NYSW ran excursions for the annual Mapathon Maple Festival, starting with a run down from Cortland. Mikado 142 was the star of the train for several years. In 1993, it was brutally cold and snowy-there had been a!20 plus inch snowfall a week earlier-even for the festival, which was notorious for its awful weather. While it made for a challenging chase, steam in the snow made for a great show.

Looking down
Title:  Looking down
Description:  Several places along I 81 provide good views of the tracks, though I dont recommend sitting on the side of the interstate to do this. Its a volation of the Vehicle and Traffic Law for one thing, and not terribly safe for another. Nevertheless, a shot of a steam train was too much to resist, so we have this shot of the Maple Festival train near Messengervilie, seen from the shoulder of I 81.

TV 79
Title:  TV 79
Description:  TV 79 was one of the hottest trains on the railroad, only a little cooler than TVLA, which was a direct run through to the Santa Fe. TV 79 also handled Santa Fe traffic, but did not run through, and had to transfer across Chicago. I think it may have also handled cars for Chicago delivery at 51st St. Here we see it blasting through the station behind a four unit set of GP 40-2s, a common power set for this type train.

All GEs
Title:  All GEs
Description:  This was a pretty common power set on Conrail in those days. They had gone big for GEs, and had many 4 axle units, which did exactly what the did on the NYC-handle fast intermodal trains. The descendants of the U25B have 106 platforms and 3 COFC in hand as they head west.
