KCS Retirement |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern engineer and railfan Robert "Tillie" Blank and his wife were being honored on his retirement. The event was in the lunch room at WEST YARD, just outside of New Orleans. Bob went into engine service on the New Orleans Public Belt around 1940, and after a couple of moves spent most of his railroad career as an engineer on the Louisiana & Arkansas/Kansas City Southern. He was a regular engineer on the SOUTHERN BELLE during that train's later years. |

KCS 4117 |
Description: |
Back in 1984 transfer runs from the Kansas City Southern to the New Orleans Public Belt typically had 10-20 cars and were handled by a switch engine; but today the train had 40 loaded C&NW hoppers behind the 12 cars of mixed freight, so the railroad used one of the GP30's which were assigned to New Orleans for local work. The train is on the NOPB at Walnut Street. |

KCS Victims |
Description: |
KCS AC4400CW 2040 and GP40-2 4813 were receiving attention at the railroad’s West Yard in New Orleans so they could be sent to the BNSF for permanent repairs. These had been the second and third units on KCS New Orleans-Kansas City train 10 when they were sideswiped by ATSF C40-8W 902 on BNSF Memphis-Houston train H-MEMPTR at 3AM on 20 December 2000. The lead unit on KCS 10 was AC4400CW 2018 and it was not damaged. The accident took place on the IC on the west side of the New Orleans area at Orleans Junction, and was caused by the IC crew on H-MEMPTR running a red signal. KCS 10 was exercising trackage rights over the IC and was crossing over from the northbound to the southbound main when its trailing units were struck by the BNSF train. H-MEMPTR was detouring over the IC from Memphis to New Orleans because of weather-related problems on the UP in Arkansas, so the BNSF was responsible for the repairs. ATSF 902 ended up lying on its left side, BNSF SD40M-2 7302 was partially derailed, and NS C40-9W 9126 sustained some damage. |

KCS No. 55 |
Description: |
It's 8 A.M. on a beautiful December morning along the Southern Railway's BACK BELT at Metairie Road, and we are greeted by the rare and wonderful sight of two Kansas City Southern F-units approaching with an eastbound train. The 4051 is a 3-porthole F3 built in 1947 and the 4061 is a 1951 F7 rebuilt with F9 side panels in 1956. This is KCS No. 55 and it will terminate at the Southern's Oliver Yard, on the east side of New Orleans. The train usually passes here in the late afternoon or early evening, so it is running about 12-16 hours late. In August 1982 the KCS began keeping a pair of F-units at New Orleans for situations just like this. The normal procedure was for the power that arrived on a southbound train to go out on that train's northbound counterpart, so the locomotives that arrived on No. 55 in the afternoon -- usually three geeps or a geep/slug/geep set -- would return north on No. 56 early the next day. Yesterday, No. 55 was running very late; so during the night the two F-units took No. 56 north until they met No. 55 and swapped trains. We dont know where the exchange took place, but the cab units went at least as far as Baton Rouge. Before the F-units arrived, the railroad would use a pair of locally-assigned SW1500s for this relief work; but this adversely affected the jobs that the switchers worked. Keeping a pair of elderly cab units here didn't tie up newer road power, and it allowed the switchers to handle their regular jobs without complications. The F-units were also used on heavy transfer runs. In March 1983 the schedule of one train -- No. 84 -- was changed so that there would always be a set of road power available in New Orleans, and the cab units were sent elsewhere. |

Kansas City Southern SD40 615 was photographed outside the diesel shop at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans. The locomotive was built in August 1968 and was sold to Pacific Railroad Leasing Co. (PacRail) in 1990, where it operated as PRLX 615. It was subsequently purchased by Conrail, where it was rebuilt into SD40M-2 6968 in April 1993; and it became CSX 8871 in 1999. |
