Uncle Billy Reed
Title:  Uncle Billy Reed
Description:  The NC&StL Railroad cultivated and celebrated life-long employment. Those railroaders who worked for the NC for over 40 years became part of the "Old Guard," later called the "Honor Roll." One such employee, Uncle Billy Reed, an African American railroader, served the railroad for more than 48 years and lies buried beneath this NC&StL car wheel. The inscription in the middle of the wheel reads: Born December 26, 1849 Joined Church July 27, 1866 Employed NC&StL Ry. March 3, 1883 Honor Roll June 1, 1931 Died August 26, 1934 "His Creed of Life" "I Love My Lord" "I Love My Home" "I Love MY Job." The railroad he faithfully served still runs 100 yards behind this tombstone.
