PRR 9448, FF-16, 1953
Title:  PRR 9448, FF-16, 1953
Description:  NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1953. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9448 and two more "C-Liners" whose road numbers are not recorded. #9448 is an FF-16 built by Fairbanks-Morse in 1949, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in April of 1965. They are pulling a merchandise train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, and are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to the Enola Yards. Note the Head-end Brakemen riding atop the box cars!
