PRR 8676, AS-18AM, 1965 |
Description: |
Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here at the far left (L to R) are PRR engines #8676 and #8665. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They have just arrived to serve as "helpers" for an westbound passenger train due to arrive shortly. Visible in the center is PRR engine #8677, an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It is coupled to the "eastern" work train and steam-powered crane that are rerailing the derailed cars and locomotives of the eastbound freight train on the next track over. Visible on the right (L to R) are the two derailed locomotives, PRR engines #5631 and #8890. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower each. #5631 is an AS-10AM while #8890 is an AS-10. Visible in the background are four of the original PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings. A small portion of 10th Avenue is visible in the immediate foreground. (#14 of 14) |

Very nearly the last of their kind. NdeM RS1 5655 has the hood lips and round fan top. Only the last 13 RS1s had this configuration. Baldwin would built only eight more C-Cs after NdeM 6811. |

Date approximate. With their retrieved train now in tow, 9900 & 9911 are about to cross Dewey Ave. 9900 really is an odd duck with the steam generator and pilot stripes - it must have had an interesting life before handling local freight. The Barnard Service & Supply Company (right) property is now part of the adjacent cemetery. |

RS3s on the 1st Belt - summer of 1970 - 2 of 3 |
Description: |
Date approximate. The brakie is getting ready to drop off at the switch, not at the one in the foreground however, but at the one for the Kodak lead, still a few car lengths beyond the front of the train. NYC (PC) 9901 made it into PC paint, but didn't make it into the next decade. The stub track is a leftover from when the two sidings (now both south of the Ridge) once extended across the Ridge. Those two sidings, plus a team track (on the other side of the train) and a lumber yard spur (this side) account for why the Kodak lead switch is so far down. All is gone today except for the main and the Kodak lead. |

Description: |
Altoona Action. Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop storage yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1967. Prominent here is PRR engine #9914, an AS-10AMS built by the American Locomotive Company as number "8485" in May of 1952, rated at 1,000 horsepower, and later renumbered "9914" in preparation for the Pennsylvania-New York Central merger. Brush Mountain dominates the distance. |
