Description: |
EF64 #1011 has just come out of the tunnel at Fuchu Hon-Machi with her very short train. This one has the more modern blue/white 'wide stripe' paint job. Specificationwise the 64's are practically identical to the 65's: The 64 series debuted in 1964 and were in service only a short time before the 65 series, featuring many desighn improvements, came on-line. |

JR EF64#37'Chocolate' OMY |
Description: |
This was the highlight of my 3 days watching JR trains...This EF 64, #37, is an early production version built between 1965 and {likely} 1970. This loco was painted brown in 2003 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the opening of JR's Chuo Mainline [Central Main] between Kofu and Enzan. It is now part of the 'preserved' fleet and used for charter and engineering runs. In this photo I have lightened the brown some in order to bring out the details on the cab end. |

The full frame, natural color version of #37...[it seems almost disrespectful to say but...] akin to a giant electrfied hershey bar!! -Neat thing was, I had a sense when something special was comin' down the pike, as a small group of local railfans would gather on the appropiate track and wait for the prize..and furthermore, it seems they were most all connected to some kind of app in thier phone which will tell them what train, time, and power will be on the movement of interest!! [How cool is that!!!]. Upon inquiry of the fan next to me, i was told this one has been named 'Chocolate'..and obviously well loved!! |

Parting shot of #37 in natural color. As a light move, she came into track 6 in a dignified manner and pulled up to the far end of the platform for a personnel change [or signal?] and then quickly went on. Later series of '64's did away with the cab vent slots above the marker lights. In all, I was very honoured to see such a fine lady!! |

Description: |
EF 65 #1091 works Minami senju on a june 2009 day. The EF 65 and 64 types have been very successful for the JR and in many ways could be considered Japan's answer to the SD40-2. The EF65 draws 1,500VDC; weighing 96tons and puts out 3,420 hp. |

Description: |
EF 65 #2095 is seen working the yard at Minami Senju. This one also does not carry a mini plow so is likely in dedicated yard service. Curiously, many JR freight locos sport a very European 'hoot and toot' whistle -amusing to hear when at work! |

JR EF8180OMY |
Description: |
A treat to see, this EF 81 class loco pulls a Overnight 'Blue Train' through Omiya Station. The shooting star on #80's flank indicates she was in 'Hokutosei' [Northern Star Express] service before being supplanted by a newer EH 500 type. Therefore it is appropiate that she heads up this blue train set. The EF 81 class is a further evolution of the EF64 and 65 series, notably without a nose door. They were built between 1968 and 79 by Hitachi and Mitsubishi. Thier main feature is dual volt capability, operating both at 1,500VDC or 20KVAC. They produce the same 3,420hp as the EF64-5 on DC and slightly less [3,180hp.] on AC. Soundwise, they are akin to an 'engineless' SD unit's Dynamic brakes in action. |

The complete 2 unit locomotive #16, with a bit of editing..This is the next station 'inbound' from Omiya, Saitama Shin Toshin. I had noticed outbound trains [such as this one] stopping here for signals so came back for a spell to catch trains. The EH200's in this area are primarily used to haul oil north from Tokyo. Looking rather toyish with its short frame and big wheels, the number 1 unit of EH200 #16 is certainly no toy; these locomotives turn 1,500VDC into an impressive 6,060 hp! They all sport the 'Blue Thunder Eco power' logo. These EH200's are Kawasaki products and have been in service since 2003. |
