Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 15 August 1954. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5832 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, but later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BP-50's for freight and helper service. #5832 was constructed in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. The number of the N-5 cabin car are not recorded. ("LouisFols"; #8 of 26) |
