This is a full-fledged 'death of a railroad' picture. I hit MW&E in late 1992, while on my way to look at the Texas Central. I spent an inordinate amount of time looking for their GP30 #701-literally going over very inch of railroad. This caboose was all I found. Later I found out they had sold the 701 in order to generate some cash to keep going, and were trip-leasing UP power whenever they had cars to move (not often). They were actually in the middle of abandonment proceedings when I took this picture. So this anonymous ex Mopac caboose was actually the last 'active' piece of the MW&E on the eve of abandonment. |
