Here is a postal card entitled "Rockville Bridge." Postmarked: 17 June 1954. Caption On Reverse: "The largest stone arch bridge in the world, it is 3,810 feet long, has 48 spans, and carries four tracks of the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was completed in 1902 at a cost of $975,000. There are 440,000,000 pounds of stone in this powerful viaduct, which is 52 feet wide over the Susquehanna River. Location of the Bridge is approximately four miles north of [Harrisburg] and the main highway passes beneath it. Kodachrome by Ernest Bostelman." In this context, the River flows from right to left on its merry way to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. |
