Wishful thinking |
Description: |
A pair of FAs is coupled elephant style at the Morris Park shop, probably dreaming of the days when theyd go out like this on heavy freight. Ah, the memories!! Note the coupler on 105. This is one of the Harold protect engines, along with 101. They are fitted with couplers that will mate with the M 1 and M 3 cars, and are stationed at Harold Tower in LI City, to fetch a disabled MU train should it be necessary. The pair would shortly be repainted in a dark gray/orange scheme, a 1960's retro paint job that was quite attractive on them. |

Nassau overhead |
Description: |
A view of Nassau tower and the switches to the Oyster Bay branch, looking down from the Mineola Blvd overpass. We see a westbound train coming off the branch behnid an FA. At one time, there was a connection from the Oyster Bay branch to a line that went down behind Franklin Av in Garden City, to the location of Garden tower, which was at that time a four way junction of the line from Mineola, the Hempstead Branch and the Mitchell Field Secondary. The line from Mineola was abaondoned and pulled up in the 1960s-I can recall very vaguely seeing Alco S types on the line on a few rare occasions in the mid 60's; the other lines remain. There is an office building at right just out of the photo. It's new since the last time I was in Mineola, about 1988. It stands where there was a connecting track from the Main Line to the line to Garden City. That track went to the right of the ivy covered building at far right. The platform you see was not extended til the 80's. |

Constructed by Alco in 1947 for the New Haven Railroad as an FA-1, this locomotive was mainly used to handle freight trains between Maybrook, NY and New Haven. Purchased by the LIRR in 1974, it was converted into a cab control car for use with Long Island commuter equipment, serving with numerous C-420s, GP38-2s and MP15s before retirement. |

A forler Long Island Rail}oad rebuilt Power Pack is on home rails in the yard, originally constructed by Alco as New Haven Railroad 0428 an FA-1. Assigned to pull mainlinb freight on the New Haven, it was retired by Penn Central and sold to the Long Island. The LIRR had the unit rebuilt as a cab control unit for use on diesel powered trains, first working with Alco C-420s and later EMD MP15 and GP38-2 unvts. It is one of two known New Haven FA-1s to survive today. |
