Berwind-White, "Nancy," 0-4-0, 1960
Title:  Berwind-White, "Nancy," 0-4-0, 1960
Description:  BWCX. Here is an original photo that was taken at the Berwind-White Railroad Car Shops in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 12 April 1960. Shown here is the Vulcan 0-4-0 steam locomotive named "Nancy." The engineer is Bob Wingard. Alas, I do not know the name of the other man. The builder's plate indicates "Vulcan Locomotive Works ~ 1918." This locomotive was retired during the Winter of 1963-1964, so it served faithfully for around 46 years! Despite all of the thousands of steam engines that were built by and for the Pennsylvania Railroad, this was the last operating steam engine in Blair County! "Nancy" is now on exhibit at the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Bob Wingard (the locomotive engineer) is shifting one of the brass-bearing truck assemblies used only in the Shops from one location to another. Perhaps that is "Smitty" riding on the cabin steps. The track at the far right was the connecting link with the Pennsylvania Railroad. Once upon a time, there was a complete wye turn-around out there.

Title:  Berwind-White, "Nancy," 0-4-0, 1964
Description:  BWCX. Here is an original photo that I took at the Berwind-White Railroad Car Shops in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 24 March 1964. Shown here is the steam locomotive called "Nancy." In this context, it looks like "The Little Engine That Could" has been relegated to the bone yard. All was not lost, however, as it was purchased and restored by Charles Hazelett of West Loop and eventually donated to the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The builders plate indicates "Vulcan ~ 1918," which means that "Nancy" served faithfully for 46 years!

PRR 5600, BS-7M, 1964
Title:  PRR 5600, BS-7M, 1964
Description:  BWCX. Here is an original photo that I took at the Berwind-White Railroad Car Shops in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 24 March 1964. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5600, a BS-7M switcher built by Baldwin in 1950 and rated at 750 horsepower. It is shifting newly-painted TrailerTrain flatcar #550453, an ACF F-89. Since the driving wheels on the steam locomotive called "Nancy" kept slipping off, it became necessary to procure a replacement. This Diesel locomotive was "pinch-hitting" until a replacement was found.
