PRR 470008, F-29, 1963 |
Description: |
Everyday. Here is an original photo that I took in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 28 September 1963. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad F-29 heavy duty flatcar #470008. It's sitting near the Yard Master's office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street. Partially visible here (L to R) are the venerable Water Tower (last vestage of the "Age of Steam") and two diesel-electric switchers: #9131 and #8100. #9131 is a BS-10A built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in July of 1948 and rated at 1,000 horsepower. #8100 is a BS-12 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in February of 1954 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. Hollidaysburg's famous "Chimney Rocks" are also visible in the distance! |

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9254, a BS-10A built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1948, rated at 1,000 horsepower, and retired in September of 1967 after just 19 years of revenue service. In this context, it's pulling a two-car local freight train eastward on the railroad line between Montandon and Milesburg. ("Red Shift" slide converted to Black & White.) |

PRR DS-4-4-1000 9275 |
Description: |
PRR DS-4-4-1000 9275 somewhere in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa June 1965, photo by R. S. Short, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in January, 1949 (c/n 73888), Baldwin built two versions of the DS-4-4-1000, the successor to the VO-1000. The first version was powered by a normally-aspired 608NA eight-cylinder diesel, and the second version was powered by the 606SC six-cylinder Elliot turbocharged diesel. The spotting feature is four exhaust stacks for the 608NA, and a single stack for the 606SC. |
